A lot of women and women advocates have been very adamant about social progress in terms of societal standards of femininity. New efforts to combat objectification of women are berth on almost a daily basis. More over, when compared to 20th century and earlier historical accounts, the prevalence of women is certain professional realms such as, cooperate offices, entrepreneurship, and politics is at an all-time high. The idea that many social campaigns aim to have female existence be independent of any male influence efforts is very common yet there is a rather peculiar irony that also exists throughout society; that being various procedures for female enhancement, i.e. plastic surgery, breast implants, butt-lifts, etc. The point is that on one hand there is cultural revolution to have women be acknowledge as equal and unconfined by male criterion in every facet, i.e. human rights, equal pay, etc. On the other hand, the fascination over physical enhancements has occurred at an almost overnight rate. So much so that is embedded within pop culture as seen within social media, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Which begs the question of whether or not such is still largely based or at least influenced by male perceptions and standards of what a female is supposed to look like, i.e. flat stomach, curves, ample backside, etc.

To say the least, the amount of people, in particular women, who have made use of surgical alterations to their physique is nothing short of a phenomenon. Of course there are exceptions. Not every individual who get enhancements do so seeking approval from the opposite sex, however in general is may be difficult to dispute otherwise. The practice of plastic surgery has help to transform social norms, thus making such efforts of self-improvement more acceptable in terms what may be considered alluring. The underline paradox that goes along with this narrative is that it can still be very much considered male-driven. If not a relationship goal a lot females see enhancements as a beneficial for a particular field of work, i.e. models, dancers, cocktail waitress, etc. All of which who account for male patrons. Also some of the most popular doctors in this line of work are men. For a lot of women advocates this mode of reasoning is in direct conflict with ideas about women empowerment. How then does a society reconcile the two or are they completely separate issues? Can a true feminist employ such plastic surgery? Or is it an issue at all to be resolved. Perhaps the election of the first female president, as commander in chief of the free world might do away with a need for definitive answer to any of these. Should it not just be a woman’s prerogative to accept whatever role she so desires for her lifestyle? However, at the end of the day a lot can be said about the determining factors that go into exactly why physical enhancements have made such a huge impact, as well as, such an essential means of self-improvement.
